Trent Triumph
24 May 2004
Batchworth joined most of the other BDA crews in very sunny Nottingham for their first race on the Trent on Sunday and came back with two trophies and an intact 500m record, albeit by the slightest of margins.
A minor set back in the 250m semi-finals saw us give away the lead to a fired up Worcester team in their shiny new boat and meant we had to qualify for the finals as the fastest loser (and, apparently, we nearly didn't!). We made up for it, however, in the final and turned the tables on them to take first place with Worcester in second.
The 500m event was equally tough and the semi-final saw us and Henley battling it out, with both teams knocking about 6 or more seconds off their heat times and finishing very close. We made it through to the finals as winners with Henley making it through as fastest losers.
So, the final... probably one of the toughest for a season or so! Henley, Worcester, Batchworth, Amathus - all wanting to prove a point and at the end all four teams got off not knowing whether they'd proved it or not and, by all accounts, nor did the spectators.
As it happens, we didn't find out until prize giving where it turned out we had pipped Amathus to the post who, themselves, had pipped Worcester who, in turn had pipped Henley. About 0.9 seconds separated the whole field so congratulations to all teams - it was a tough fight.

Notts Anaconda, who did a great job of organising the event, have also introduced a new perpetual trophy in memory of club members and Batchworth were honoured to be the inaugral recipients by being "the best team of the day" - their words, not ours :-)

More from the Rocket shortly but, in the meantime we have a few pictures here.
