V for Victoria
25 Jul 2005
It couldn't have been much better from a dragon boating point of view at the Victoria Docks last week-end. Due to some unusual steering and subsequent time penalty Batchworth won the inaugural 100m sprint races without having to take on the home team, Thames.
Then, with the short stuff out of the way and the weather warm and grey but just about managing to stay dry, the 500m event went one stage better. The head-to-head with Thames ended 1 second in our favour so we not only won the event (with a cracking time I might add!) but brought our league total up to 95 points moving us clear at the top of the table and far enough so that we can't be caught this year.
The Batchworth Apsire junior/scratch crew were also out for the second time this year and had a full day of racing earning themselves a raft of medals for the best junior crew - yeah they were the only one but they were still the best by far!
There were great results too for Kingston - 2nd in the 100m and 3rd in the 500m (beating Amathus in the process) and WAM making the cup major final without doing a rep - apparently for the first time ever.
Thames and Amathus still have to tough it out for second and third places in the premier league but can Kingston hold off Henley to take fourth this year and can WAM do enough to knock Amathus Bees off the top of the standard league? Only two races to go paddle pickers...
